As we move towards the end of the year, the attention of much of the world turns to Christmas. In the movie world that usually means a shift away from action movies towards family features and festive rom-coms.

That’s not ideal for the action fans, but there is usually one or two movies which studio’s push out to tide us over until the New Year. This year is no exception with two very different, but equally exciting action films hitting our screens.

Justice League

  • Release Date: 17 November 2017 (USA)

With Hollywood seemingly addicted to the Marvel Universe right now, Justice sees the latest offering from their rivals at DC Comics. It is intended to be the 5th movie in the DC Extended Universe series following on from Man of Steel, Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Wonder Woman.

The plot of Justice League sees Ben Affleck’s Batman join forces with Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman to take on an even greater enemy. They search the world and recruit a team of meta-humans comprising Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash. Together they are the Justice League and they must face off against the catastrophic threat of Steppenwolf, the herald and second in command to alien warlord Darkseid, and his army of Parademons who are on the hunt for three Mother Boxes on Earth.

With reactions to Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad being mixed among both critics and fans, there is much riding on this movie. It is reported that studio Warner Brothers are waiting to see how it does at the Box Office before pushing ahead with future DC Universe projects.

Justice League Star Wars: The Last Jedi

The public response from early screenings appears encouraging. After a 30-minute teaser was shown to fans in China recently, responses on social media included “A film worth waiting a person’s whole life for. So much better even than Wonder Woman”, “Marvel should be panicking. Cheering and applause everywhere”, and “Visually stunning, (the) theatre had to play the footage twice. (People are) crying”.

Certain Justice League seems to have got everything right. Director Zack Snyder has a good track record of blending light-hearted and humorous moments with kickass action sequences. And from trailers, it seems that Justice League has plenty of both. Ben Affleck seemed ill-suited to the role of Batman at first, but has grown into the role enormously and now seems made for it. He ably leads a stellar cast including Gal Gadot, whose superb turn in Wonder Woman has her lined up as a Hollywood star for years to come.

Justice League looks set to take cinema’s by storm over the festive period. And as someone who had reservations about all the previous movie in this franchise, Justice League is the first I really can’t wait to see.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

  • Release Date: 15 December 2017 (USA)

The Star Wars franchise needs absolutely no introduction and the latest episode is as hotly anticipated as every Star Wars has been since the very first.

The Last Jedi plot remains a closely guarded secret but it is known that the late Carrie Fisher reprises the role of Princess Leia which she played in the original three Star Wars movies alongside Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker, who made his return in the previous movie, The Force Awakens.

Other than the cast, all that is known about the new movie is that Daisy Ridley’s Rey goes with Luke Skywalker on an adventure with Leia, Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Issac) that unlocks mysteries of the Force and secrets of the past. The movie trailer shares little more detail but promises more of the series’ stellar special effects as well as no shortage of combat scenes.

Justice League Star Wars: The Last Jedi

This latest Star Wars movie has been written and directed by Rian Johnson, whose sci-fi action thriller Looper proved a success with both fans and critics. If he can bring any of the wit and intelligence he displayed in that movie to the Star War’s world, we will be in for a real treat.

While loyal Star Wars aficionadoes will always lap up anything new from that world, this latest movie looks like it could just offer a little bit more. Rumoured cameo’s from the likes of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, and Justin Theroux plus the final Star Wars appearance from Carrie Fisher, who tragically died earlier this year, look likely to bring even more fans out.

Star War’s always goes above and beyond in its action sequences and the dedication of its cast to their training and the authenticity of their combat is beyond question. All in all, this latest movie promises much and looks a great way to bring the movie year to an end.
